His’n'Hers Socks

Posted: February 13th, 2008, by Hazy

Time for the knitter to chip in. :)

My main knitting project this week was trying to find a sock pattern that I could make both in women’s and men’s sizes.  With Valentine’s day coming (well, tomorrow) and our wedding anniversary two days after, I thought it would be nice if my DH and I had matching socks.  He loves my handknit socks but he goes through them pretty quick.  One pair are on their second repair.  But he’s proud to wear them, so much that he shows them off to the kids that he teaches.  One kid was so impressed that he has been pestering my DH to ask me to knit a pair of socks for him, he’d even pay!  If only I was a quicker knitter I might be able to make some money out of knitting special school socks.

Anyway, after a lot of searching, and asking for help on Ravelry (though they suggested using the Sensational Knitted Socks books but I haven’t worked out how to use them yet!  I’m easily intimidated) I settled on a pattern:

His and Hers Socks

My DH gets the brown yarn which is Dream in Color Smooshy in Chinatown Apple and Mine will be made in Mountain Colors Bearfoot in Gold Rush.  The Thelonious Pattern by Cookie A is a really versatile pattern.  I have seen it made in a solid color (as shown in the picture) but I have also seen it made in a variegated yarn and it suits both.  So although we’ll have matching socks, we get our own style!

The Frog Princess

Posted: February 9th, 2008, by Jenn

Hello everyone, my name is Jenn, and I’m a yarnaholic.  Seriously.  I have something like 97 pounds of yarn in my stash.  It’s a good thing I’m such a prolific crocheter though, otherwise I’m never going to reach my goal of only 40 pounds stash at the end of the year.

Part of being a prolific crocheter seems to be that I’m also a prolific frogger.  In fact this weekend I’m going to be frogging many recent projects.

Let me introduce you to the dreaded red sweater.

No pattern

I started it with no pattern, thinking it couldn’t be too hard to make it up as I went along.  But then I started doubting myself and bought a magazine with a pattern I thought may work.  So I frogged it and started that pattern only to realize that because I was using the wrong yarn even by following the ’small’ directions I was going to come up with a huge sweater.  So I frogged that too.  I didn’t even take a picture.

Next!

side to side cowl

Then I decided to follow another pattern (Side-to-side cowl).  Of course 1.5 skeins into it I realized that the ribbing really wasn’t going to be that flattering and figured it was better to frog it now, rather than spend all that time making a sweater that looked awful on me.  Sigh.  So last night I froged that too.

I really liked this sweater, but not so much the v-neck, so I was going to try adjusting the pattern to make it in rounds right from the beginning and then go back and add a small cowl if I had enough yarn leftover.  After 3 hours of starting, frogging, starting, frogging, starting… the best I could come up with is this…

sweet sweater no v

Forget it. I’m not sure how much more frogging this poor Homespun can take.  I’m making a throw.

Now, about the mittens.  I was scared to make them in the first place.  Something about thumbs terrify me.  But I bravely made the first mitten (except the thumb) and decided I should make the second mitten next, so I could make both thumbs at the same time.  What I neglected to note was that while I started the ribbing using the women’s instructions I did the palm in the men’s instructions.  When I went back a week later to make the second mitten I only remembered that I used the men’s instructions, and voila… mitts that don’t match.

mittens that don't match

Also I noticed I missed a row in the palm of one of the mittens.  I wouldn’t care if the mittens were for me, but these are being sold.  Frog.  Le sigh.

big dream catchers

I made 2 Dreamcatcher squares last month for a CAL and the first one (green) came out 11 inches instead of 12.  I tried to make it bigger the second time (pink) and only got a sloppy looking 11.5 inch square.  I decided I was going to wait and see what February had in store before choosing which gauge to stick with.  My February square came out to 10 inches. I rather like the look of it though, so I’m going to frog both Dreamcatchers and make them 10 inches (which I think will look nicer anyway).  But still… sigh.

pink bunny slippers

And I was making a pair of slippers for my grandmother, but decided they were no good and frogged those too.  I’m going to use that yarn for myself and have chosen an entirely different pattern for hers.

I’m hoping to actually produce some finished objects in February, instead of working the same yarn over and over and over again.  And if not… at least it’s the shortest month of the year.
